Why couples choose premarital counseling

  • Talk about the big topics while it is still easy
  • Learn how each of you handles conflict
  • Get clear on money and shared goals
  • Understand each other's families
  • Plan for children and parenting
  • Build habits you will use for years
  • Blend families or start a second marriage
  • Feel more confident on the wedding day

Why premarital counseling works

Most couples do not argue about whether they love each other. They argue about money, time, families, and who does what. Talking through those topics before the wedding helps you find differences while they are still easy to discuss.

Premarital counseling is also a chance to learn skills you will use for the rest of your marriage: how to bring up a concern, listen without defending, and repair after a disagreement.

Topics we cover

The conversations that matter

Communication

How each of you raises concerns, and what shuts you down.

Conflict and repair

Your patterns in a fight, and how to come back together.

Money

Spending, saving, debt, and who manages what.

Families of origin

What you each learned growing up, and what you want to keep.

In-laws and boundaries

Holidays, visits, advice, and loyalty.

Children and parenting

Whether, when, and how you want to raise a family.

Careers and time

Ambitions, schedules, moves, and time together.

Intimacy and affection

Needs, expectations, and keeping closeness alive.

What sessions look like

Sessions are online and include both partners. Ramin guides the conversation, asks questions you may not have thought to ask each other, and helps you turn what you learn into agreements you both feel good about.

Many couples choose a set number of sessions in the months before the wedding. You can decide together during the free consultation. For a head start, read 12 questions to ask before marriage.

For every kind of couple

Premarital counseling is for engaged couples, couples moving in together, second marriages, and blended families. It does not mean something is wrong. It means you are taking your future seriously.

Sessions are not tied to any religion. If faith or culture matters to you, it is welcome as part of the conversation.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Still wondering about something? Ask during your free consultation.

When should we start premarital counseling?

Ideally a few months before the wedding, when there is time to talk without last-minute planning stress. But any time before or shortly after the wedding is helpful.

Is premarital counseling religious?

No. Sessions are not tied to any faith. If faith or culture matters to you, it is welcome as part of the conversation.

We rarely fight. Do we still need it?

Couples who get along well often benefit the most, because they can explore big topics calmly and build habits before stress arrives.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For many concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship issues, research has found video therapy to be comparable to in-person sessions. Many clients also find it easier to stay consistent when there is no commute.

Do you take insurance?

Sessions are private pay (out of network). During your free consultation you can ask about using out-of-network benefits with your insurance plan.

How much does therapy cost?

Individual sessions are $250 and couples sessions are $500. The first consultation is free. Sessions are private pay, and Ramin is an out-of-network provider.

Who can you see?

Because Ramin is licensed in California, he can see clients who are located in California at the time of the session, anywhere in the state, from San Diego to the Bay Area.
